Hampton Countertop Pros fits quartzite countertops in homes across Hampton. We measure your cabinets first, then have each quartzite slab cut to fit them.
What quartzite is
The U.S. Geological Survey defines quartzite as a metamorphic rock made mainly of quartz, formed from sandstone. It says metamorphic rocks form when rocks are put under high heat, high pressure, hot mineral-rich fluids or, more often, some mix of these. It also says this does not melt the rocks, but turns them into denser, more compact rocks.
We'd have you look at the actual quartzite slab before it goes on your kitchen counters, your island or a bathroom vanity top.
Silica dust when quartzite is cut
An OSHA and NIOSH hazard alert says that, depending on the type of stone, countertops may contain over 90% crystalline silica. It says the highest silica levels are found in quartzite and in certain engineered stones. OSHA calls silicosis an incurable lung disease that can lead to disability and death.
The same alert tells countertop firms to do as much of the work as they can in the shop instead of at your house. When some finishing has to be done on site, it says to work outdoors and use water to keep the dust down. Whoever you hire, ask them where your slab will be cut and how they keep the dust down.
What sets the price of quartzite
We price quartzite countertops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the slab you choose, how much counter we cover, the edge you pick, and how many holes we cut for the sink and the cooktop, the burners set into the counter.
Not sure quartzite is the one? We also fit granite, quartz and marble, and we can quote more than one.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The name of the quartzite and the thickness of the slab.
- Which slab is yours, so the one you picked is the one that gets cut.
- A drawing of the layout, with every seam and cutout marked.
- Which edge you are getting.
- Where the slab will be cut and shaped.
- Whether taking out and hauling away the old countertops is in the price.
- Who disconnects and reconnects the sink, faucet and cooktop.
Questions about quartzite countertops in Hampton
Is quartzite the same as quartz?
No. NIOSH says engineered stone is also known as quartz, and OSHA describes engineered stone as man-made. The quartzite we fit is solid natural stone, while the quartz countertops we fit are made of crushed stone bound with resin.
Is quartzite the same as marble?
No. The U.S. Geological Survey lists quartzite and marble as two different metamorphic rocks, and the OSHA and NIOSH alert says marble contains little or no crystalline silica.
Do I need a permit for new quartzite countertops in Hampton?
The City of Hampton says you don't need a permit to replace a plumbing fixture in the same location, other than a gas water heater. Water lines, electrical wiring, gas lines and sheetrock (drywall) are on its list of work that does need one. If your new quartzite top means moving the sink or adding an outlet, we'll check with the city's permit office with you before we start.
How do I clean quartzite countertops?
FoodSafety.gov says to wash countertops with hot, soapy water, especially after they've held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. On any countertop we fit, we'd still set hot pans on a stand or pad and use a cutting board for knives.
Can you replace my old laminate with quartzite?
Yes, we can take out old laminate or tile tops and fit quartzite in their place as part of a countertop replacement job.
Can you put in a backsplash at the same time?
Yes, we can. Once the quartzite is set, we do backsplash installation, facing the strip of wall just above the counter with tile or stone that goes with it.
Can you fix a chip in a quartzite countertop?
Send us a photo, or we can come out and look. We'll tell you whether a countertop repair will hold or the piece should be replaced.
