What granite is

A report in the CDC's library names granite as a common natural stone. The U.S. Geological Survey says granite has been used for building materials for thousands of years.

The EPA says granite's durability and decorative appearance make it a popular building material in homes and buildings. We'd have you look at the actual slab before it goes on your kitchen counters, your island or a bathroom vanity top.

Granite and radon

The EPA says granite, like any other stone, may contain veins of naturally occurring radioactive elements like uranium and thorium, and that the amounts may vary from stone to stone, or even within a single slab. It calls radon a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that may cause lung cancer, and says radon released from granite typically will be diluted by ventilation.

The EPA also says it is extremely unlikely that radiation from granite countertops would raise your yearly dose above normal, natural background levels. It says radon from the soil under a house is a more common problem and a far larger health risk than radon from granite.

Silica dust when granite is cut

The CDC library report says granite is about 30% crystalline silica, compared with more than 90% in engineered stone. OSHA says cutting stone and making stone countertops expose workers to fine silica dust. It calls silicosis an incurable lung disease that can lead to disability and death. Whoever you hire, ask them where your slab will be cut and how they keep the dust down.

What sets the price of granite

We price granite countertops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the slab you choose, how much counter we cover, the edge you pick, and how many holes we cut for the sink and the cooktop, the burners set into the counter.

Not sure granite is the one? We also fit quartz, quartzite and marble, and we can quote more than one.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The name of the granite and the thickness of the slab.
  • Which slab is yours, so the one you picked is the one that gets cut.
  • A drawing of the layout, with every seam and cutout marked.
  • Which edge you are getting.
  • Whether taking out and hauling away the old countertops is in the price.
  • Who disconnects and reconnects the sink, faucet and cooktop.

Questions about granite countertops in Hampton

Should I test my home for radon if I have granite?

The EPA recommends testing all homes for radon, whether or not they have granite countertops. Its number for radon help is 1-800-SOS-RADON (767-7236), and it says you can buy do-it-yourself test kits in home stores or online. If the levels are high, the EPA says the best fix may be a device that removes radon from the air, rather than taking out the granite.

Do I need a permit for new granite countertops in Hampton?

The City of Hampton says you don't need a permit to replace a plumbing fixture in the same location, other than a gas water heater. Water lines, electrical wiring, gas lines and sheetrock (drywall) are on its list of work that does need one. If your new granite top means moving the sink or adding an outlet, we'll check with the city's permit office with you before we start.

How do I clean granite countertops?

FoodSafety.gov says to wash countertops with hot, soapy water, especially after they've held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. On any countertop we fit, we'd still set hot pans on a stand or pad and use a cutting board for knives.

Is granite the same as quartz?

No. The EPA lists quartz and granite as separate countertop materials. The granite we fit is solid natural stone, while the quartz countertops we fit are made of crushed stone bound with resin.

Can you replace my old laminate with granite?

Yes, we can take out old laminate or tile tops and fit granite in their place as part of a countertop replacement job.

Can you put in a backsplash at the same time?

Yes, we can. Once the granite is set, we do backsplash installation, facing the strip of wall just above the counter with tile or stone that goes with it.

Can you fix a chip in a granite countertop?

Send us a photo, or we can come out and look. We'll tell you whether a countertop repair will hold or the piece should be replaced.
