Hampton Countertop Pros fits bathroom vanity tops in homes across Hampton. We measure your vanity cabinet first, then have the top cut to fit it, with the holes for your sink and faucet marked before anything is cut.

Choosing a material for your vanity top

The EPA lists artificial materials, quartz, marble, slate and granite among the materials that may be used to make countertops. NIOSH says engineered stone is also known as artificial stone, manufactured stone, or quartz.

The main choices behave differently next to a bathroom sink:

  • Granite. The U.S. Geological Survey says granite is mainly made of minerals that resist acid attack, such as quartz.
  • Marble. The U.S. Geological Survey says limestone and marble are mainly made of calcite, which dissolves readily in weak acid.
  • Solid surface. A review by NIOSH researchers says the mineral in solid surface is about 70% alumina trihydrate, a powder bound together in acrylic along with other binders, pigments and trace metals.

We also fit quartz, quartzite and porcelain on vanities, and we explain each of them on its own page.

Sink and faucet holes

We cut the top to suit the sink and faucet you pick. Send us their model numbers before we cut, and we'll mark the holes from them. If you are changing the faucet too, the EPA says WaterSense labeled bathroom sink faucets that use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute can cut a sink's water flow by 30 percent or more from the standard flow of 2.2 gallons per minute without losing performance.

Water, caulk and mold

Where the top meets the wall, we run a bead of caulk, a soft sealant that keeps water out of the gap. The EPA's mold guide says the key to mold control is moisture control. It says not to caulk over moldy surfaces, and to clean up the mold and dry the surfaces first. So when we take out an old vanity top, we look at the wall behind it, and if we find mold we'll tell you before we seal the new top in.

The guide also says that if wet or damp areas are dried 24 to 48 hours after a leak or spill, in most cases mold will not grow.

What sets the price of a vanity top

We price vanity tops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the material you choose, the size of the top, the edge you pick, whether the sink sits under the top or on it, and how many holes we cut for the faucet.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The material, its name or color, and the thickness of the top.
  • The sink and faucet the top is cut for, by model number.
  • Which edge you are getting.
  • Whether taking out and hauling away the old top is in the price.
  • Who disconnects and reconnects the sink and faucet.

Questions about bathroom vanity tops in Hampton

Do I need a permit for a new vanity top in Hampton?

The City of Hampton says you don't need a permit to replace a plumbing fixture in the same location, other than a gas water heater. Water lines, electrical wiring, gas lines and sheetrock (drywall) are on its list of work that does need one. If your new vanity means moving the sink or adding an outlet, we'll check with the city's permit office with you before we start.

My house is old. Does that change anything?

The EPA says about three-quarters of the homes in the United States built before 1978 still contain some lead-based paint. If we have to disturb painted walls or trim to take out the old vanity, the EPA's lead paint rule says anyone paid to do that work in a home built before 1978 must be certified.

Can you fit a top on my existing vanity cabinet?

Yes, we can fit a new top on the cabinet you have, as long as it is level and solid. We check that when we measure, and we'll tell you if it needs work first.

Can you fit a double sink vanity?

Yes, we can cut a vanity top for two sinks, with a faucet hole set for each one.

How do I keep mold off the back of my vanity?

The EPA says to run the bathroom fan or open the window when showering. We'd also have you wipe up any water left sitting along the back edge of the top.

Can you replace an old cultured marble or laminate top?

Yes, we can take out an old vanity top and fit a new material in its place as part of a countertop replacement job.

Can you put in a backsplash at the same time?

Yes, we can. Once the vanity top is set, we do backsplash installation, facing the strip of wall just above the top with tile or stone that goes with it.

Can you do my kitchen counters at the same time?

Yes, we fit kitchen countertops too, and we can quote them alongside your bathroom.

Can you fix a chip in my vanity top?

Send us a photo, or we can come out and look. We'll tell you whether a countertop repair will hold or the top should be replaced.
